Is there one area that you feel like you could improve in your life? Is it studying the scriptures or incorporating gospel teaching into your home? Maybe it involves exercising and eating properly or it could be in reaching out and helping others. These are all areas that many people feel that they could improve in. It is too easy to say that you will take care of it later.
This week as I read Elder Eyring’s talk “This Day” I was impressed with how important it is to constantly strive to do better. Elder Eyring really emphasized the need to serve others as a way to grow closer to the Lord. He mentioned that you should begin each day with a prayer asking the Lord who you can help or what you should do to serve each day.
This is a very powerful thing to do. I personally know one person who starts each day with this prayer. She has a presence that emanates love for others. She tries to help someone each and every day. You can sense in her the strength of her testimony.
There are so many excuses and reasons not to do this, but it is important to follow the counsel given in this talk. I believe that you if you do this you will be able to understand and develop true charity. President Hinckley has also spoken about the importance of serving others if you are unhappy.
It is important to remember that service does not always mean a huge time consuming act or hours of your time. It can often be something relatively simple. The Lord will help you to accomplish the tasks that He asks you to do. So when it comes to serving others a daunting task might actually be a lot easier to complete than it initially looks.
