Have you been struggling with keeping your New Year’s resolutions? There could be things you are doing or not doing that will sabotage all of your efforts, not only in the way of losing motivation but getting injured.
Let’s consider some of the ways this can happen. One way is by jumping too quickly into a fitness routine that your body isn’t ready for.
I can’t help but chuckle as my husband and I discussed his ability (or should I say inability) to handle an insanity workout. We were watching an infomercial and both of us agreed that the movements might be a little too much for his middle-aged body.
Start small. Begin with a realistic exercise plan.
Another way efforts can be sabotaged is by not proceeding with caution. Warming up is important, along with stretching afterwards.
Make sure you are using the equipment correctly and are wearing the appropriate type of exercise gear. It’s critical that you listen to your body. Don’t push beyond your limits.
Rest is important. Not only short spurts while working out but during the week to allow your body to recover. Don’t attempt to exercise seven days a week. Your body needs a break.
You can prevent efforts from being sabotaged by acting what you are…if a beginner, don’t attempt a two hour workout. If you are a moderate fitness enthusiast, then you can take it up a notch.
On the other end of this you can also sabotage things by not challenging yourself. While it’s important to be realistic and make sure your exercise program is doable, you don’t want it to be so easy that you aren’t challenged.
Once your body adapts, try something new or increase the amount of time you exercise. Be willing to expand your exercise repertoire.
By following these tips, you are less likely to lose the motivation. You might even save yourself from a serious injury.
