It’s tempting, I know it. You have a pile of clothes that need to be donated or just plain thrown away. But don’t do it! Resist the temptation. It’s hard for me to give that advice being such an organized, anti-clutter person. However, there are many ways to make those old ragged clothes, new again. And it won’t cost much!
Quilts
Take those favorite worn out garments and cut squares out of them. Remember, with a quilt, there is no matching necessary. Make a beautiful quilt for a child’s bed with their outgrown, or worn out baby clothing. A friend of mine took clothes from when she was first dating her now husband of eleven years, and created a quilt for their bed out of the clothes. He even gave her a few of his shirts from that time period. They have a unique one of a kind blanket for their bed, and nothing was wasted. If you don’t know how to make a quilt, you can either learn (it’s really not hard at all), or you can enlist a friend’s help.
Kitchen Rags
Not just rags, but potholders, towels and cleaning or wash cloths can be made from old clothing. You can sew them, add fringe and embellishments to make them decorative if you want. Aprons are another commodity lost. If you can figure out how to sew an apron, it can save you loads of money in the long run. Wearing an apron during cooking or baking keeps splatter of oil and grease off your clothes as well as dyes and other items you might be using. You can use an old worn out T-shirt as an apron if you want. Nobody said it had to be an actual apron!
Rugs
This is a fun one for children to try. You can create rag rugs by cutting strips of fabric from many different items. Teach the children how to tie them together to create a rug. It will be a great addition to the family room if you use some clothing from each family member.
Denim
Again with the sewing, but you could have some fun with all those jeans that have holes in them. You can create a quilt, or comforter. You can make purses, cover books with the material, use them in other craft projects, make doll clothes. The possibilities are endless as long as you use some creativity.
