Stop staring at the falling snow and plummeting mercury. Now is the time to plan your escape from the brutal winter conditions. Fortunately, a few well-known airlines are lending a helping hand to sun-seeking travelers looking to take a break from Old Man Winter without breaking the bank.
Frontier, AirTran and Southwest recently launched widespread sales for flights through the end of the month. Some fares are priced as much as 50 percent off depending on location and date of departure. Travel experts say commercial carriers are looking to fill empty seats in the weeks leading up to Easter; however most are not paying big bucks to advertise the sales. Rather, these so-called retaliatory fares are being added to airlines’ Facebook pages and Twitter accounts.
You can access the sales by signing up for alerts on the airlines’ websites or by registering with online booking sites such as Orbitz and Expedia or other travel sites like Travelzoo or TripAdvisor, which will notify you via email when airfare deals become available.
Currently, the best sales are being offered on routes between Denver and New York and between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. In addition, some major airlines are offering super savings to parts of the Caribbean from key East Coast cities, provided bookings are made by the end of February and travel is completed by the end of May.
AirTran’s current sale includes 3,000 routes with round-trip fares starting at $118. Likewise, Southwest Airlines Co. is offering round-trip deals starting at $128. Of course, the deals won’t be around for long. Once the airline sells out of the discounted seats, you will have to dig deep if you want to take off on the same flight.
Fortunately, if you play your cards right, you can save on airfare, hotel rooms and rental cars. The trick is to find an online booking site that will bundle your flight, hotel and car in a package that will save you the most money. Since online booking sites often secure deals that aren’t available to travelers purchasing parts of their trip individually, you can often score mega-savings by opting for a package deal. Still, you will have to act fast if you find a great deal, as prices will head up by the end of March in anticipation of school vacations.
