Don’t Wait Until January 1st

The biggest month in which Americans “become” the biggest is December. This tends to be the month in which a lot of weight is put on. Sometimes it is with the mindset, “I will make changes in the New Year.” But I would say…don’t wait until January 1st.

Here is the thing with having the mindset of, “I will eat anything I want this month and then start a healthier diet come January.” You are making the work of losing weight more difficult. The more you put on now, the more you will need to take off.

Recently I blogged that there is nothing magical that is going to happen come the New Year. Just like there is nothing magical to the old, “Start again on Monday” routine. Monday comes and Monday goes…January 1st comes and January 1st goes. It is just another day.

Maybe you are thinking about the upcoming holiday parties and the baking you plan on doing next weekend. You don’t want to not partake in these things. Well, then go ahead and enjoy them. But that doesn’t mean that meanwhile you can’t start exercising. It doesn’t mean that you can’t eat healthier on the other days.

The more you have it ingrained in your mind that you are going to make these drastic changes on January 1st, the more you have actually set yourself up for failure. So if you truly want to see 2012 become a better year for your health, start now. Don’t wait.

In fact, it will be easier to truly make changes come the New Year if you have started getting your body used to exercise. Even if it’s just 15 minutes a day, it’s something. It will also be easier if you have already started trying new, healthier foods. It’s better than nothing.

I am all about achieving but sometimes sudden, drastic changes just don’t work for people. This is why I am encouraging at the very least, the start of some small changes this month. But please don’t wait until January 1st.
