Door to Door

When it comes to door to door salespeople, I am highly suspicious. And I make no apology for being that way.

I’d rather err on the side of caution that be taken in as some people have by salespeople and tradesmen who come to the door with offers that are apparently too good to refuse. That’s the thing those that are supposed to be too good to refuse usually have a catch attached to them.

Once we got caught when we were younger and swore never to repeat the experience. People are getting caught all the time by shonky and unqualified tradesmen who don’t do the work they promised to. Like the tradesman who came looking for work and were hired to paint the tin roof. They painted straight over the rust. These men were not qualified tradesmen and were just out to make quick dollar.

Others come to the door offering all sort of unbelievable deals. For unscrupulous people it can be just a ruse to get instead the house and case it out. So my advice is don’t be tempted to buy from someone door to door. Never reveal personal information to them about holidays, income, items you have in the house or anything else.

Make sure when you do hire someone to do a job that they are a licensed builder, house painter, handyman, plumber, electrician or whatever it is and don’t be tempted by deals that sound too good to be true. They invariable are. Be wary of people that tell you have to make a decision on the day to get the special price. Always take time to check them out and check their price against the competition.

In our house the policy is if we want a job done we will contact the appropriate people. We never buy from or employ anyone who comes to the door, or who calls us unless we have contacted them first. It might sound harsh but it’s the safest way not to get caught out.
