Dorm Room Decorating

It won’t be long until you head off to school (or until your child heads off to college life). So, how do you plan to decorate (or help your kids decorate) the dorm room?

Dorm rooms are generally neutral in color but you may want to find out for sure. If you haven’t had a chance to see the dorm, call to ask for details. Ask about size, color, number and location of electrical outlets and windows, and find out what items are included, such as a bed. Also, ask which, if any, items are forbidden (such as power strips with multiple outlets or microwave ovens).

What color(s) do you want to use in your dorm room? School colors? Your favorite color? Neutrals that you’ll simply accent with changeable accessories? The latter is probably the better choice, although you don’t want your space to be bland and boring. Technically, you don’t really have to stick to the typical neutrals like beige either, you can simply find something that “goes” with everything, such as denim. Denim comforters are long lasting and versatile and what doesn’t go with blue jeans?

Choosing solid colors for large items such as sheets, comforters, area rugs, and the like are probably your best bet. Remember, too many prints, especially in a small space looks chaotic, making the space feel even smaller (and messier). To add interest, try prints or textures on smaller items such as mix and match pillows and bump up the color with posters and other artwork. Add a funky lamp of other inspiration piece to express your style.

Your coolest fashion accessories can also help give some personality to your space. Guys can hang up caps or shirts bearing the logo of a favorite sports team. Girls can display cute handbags, belts, and beads.

A bulletin board is a good addition too, to leave messages for roomates and friends, to leave yourself reminders, and to hang up photos and other cool images to help personalize your space. If you can’t hang things on the wall, set it on top of your desk or dresser and lean it against the wall.
