Do’s and Don’ts of Bleach

With so many natural products out there, I’m sure the idea of using bleach is not appealing to everyone. But for those who clean “old school,” such as myself…it is something you can’t imagine being without.

However, there are some important dos and don’ts when it comes to using bleach. Although it can be great for disinfecting, removing stains and whitening clothes, you have to be careful about how you use.

For instance, although it can help remove mold and mildew, you don’t ever want to mix it with ammonia. Nor do you want it to be anywhere close to it. The combination can release toxic fumes.

Using straight bleach isn’t usually a good idea when it comes to cleaning. For instance, in the daycare I used to work at, we would have to clean the toys. But we would mix the bleach with water (about ¾ cup of bleach for every gallon of water), along with a couple of squirts of dishwashing liquid.

Diluting bleach is important no matter what you are cleaning. However, you can use straight bleach when you are whitening clothes.

Make sure you pour it into the bleach dispenser. If for some reason your washing machine doesn’t have one, you can then pour it directly into the washing machine.

If you are using bleach to clean a room—such as your kitchen or bathroom—make sure it is properly vented. Open windows to release the fumes. I literally made myself sick one time when I was using a lot of it to clean my bathroom just because I was in a closed space.

I also suggest you wear rubber gloves when you are going to be in contact with bleach. If you have sensitive skin, it could cause damage.

If you ask me, there is just something about bleach that makes everything seem cleaner. But it can also be harmful if used incorrectly. So be smart about it.
