Dozens of Uses for Coffee Cans (1)

As we are anxiously preparing for a fall garage sale in a week, we are literally finding dozens of items that we completely forgot we had. Apparently we are more a group of pack rats than I thought. Amongst useless furniture, baby items and lots of outgrown toys, we also came across a few “treasures” that we had forgotten we had. Many disposable items that we decided to keep to use for other things such as butter tubs, milk cartons, cans, lost socks, egg cartons and torn clothing. Sure, some is making it’s way right into the trash can as we clean and unearth more treasures. But, others are being kept because I already know what I can do with them and intend to begin using them.

One of these items in our treasure stash is the plethora of coffee cans I’ve found. I had no idea that I had that many, nor that I had so many shapes and sizes, plastic and tin. I think we just kept throwing them in the basement and then all of a sudden now we realize that we probably have much more than we need. Guess what we aren’t keeping for awhile?

The first thing we did was donate some to a preschool near our house. Embarassing to say, I had enough for two classes to have. They are the perfect size for them to use for trick or treating or making Christmas gifts and the teacher’s were ecstatic to get them. I don’t know what they will do with them, but I know that there are plenty of ideas – I was a preschool teacher before I was a writer. Or perhaps I was always a writer, but when I was working outside the home I was teaching and we used cans of all shapes and sizes for all sorts of things, including classroom manipulatives. No matter what they do with them, I know they will find them fun and creative and they will be used.

But what to do with all the remaining coffee cans that I still have?

First, coffee cans come in so many different shapes and sizes, and are really quite large in their biggest size allowing them to hold a lot of stuff. When you are trying to figure out what to do with a coffee can you have to have the frugal mentality of trash to treasure and see beyond an empty useless coffee can to a better solution than the trash can or recycle bin.
