Dr. Phil Cancels Britney Intervention Show

So much for that televised Britney Spears intervention Dr. Phil had hoped would make him as famous as his boss Oprah.

According to his website, Dr. Phil McGraw has officially canceled plans to devote an entire show to Britney Spears’ “difficulties.” The good doc calls the situation surrounding his meeting with the derailed pop star and the subsequent show “too intense.”

Aw, gee, ya think sending out press releases, blanketing the airwaves with ads for your upcoming show, then showing up on “Entertainment Tonight,” “The Insider,” and CBS’s “The Early Show” bragging about your “relationship” with the Spears family and your alleged chat with the out of control mother of two had anything to do with things getting “too intense?”

Or, perhaps, the heat Phil is feeling is being generated by those in the real world of psychology who described McGraw’s ambushing of Brit in her hospital room “intrusive and inappropriate.”

Or, perhaps, things got “too intense” for Dr. Phil when Britney’s father bailed on a scheduled interview for the show, which promised interviews with both Brit’s mom Lynne and her dad Jamie. The latter telling producers today that he wanted nothing to do with the intervention episode.

Dr. Phil tried to defend his actions by posting this statement on his syndicated show’s website:

“As was widely reported this weekend, at the request of concerned family members, I visited Britney Spears in the hospital. The details of that visit will, of course, remain private.”

McGraw goes on to say that he planned to tape a Dr. Phil Now show today, “focusing not on the tabloid side of Britney’s latest problems, but instead on the very serious issues surrounding this case. Clearly, it is not just Britney’s family struggling to find a way to protect adult children who cannot be ordered or compelled to seek help.”

He ended by saying that “out of consideration to the family, I have made the decision not to move forward with the taping at this particular time.”

Well, now that the Britney show is on hold Dr. Phil can go back to helping the people who really need him… children who wear baggy pants in public and the mortified moms who gave birth to them.
