Dr. Seuss Series: Horton Hears a Who

One of the most famous of all Dr. Seuss’s novels, “Horton Hears a Who” was first published in 1954.

We remember Horton, the adorable elephant from “Horton Hatches the Egg.” Now he’s back for a whole new adventure, courtesy of his remarkable hearing.

He was splashing around in the pool when he heard a very tiny noise. He stopped splashing and looked around, but no one was there. Then he heard it again. It was a very small cry for help.

He looked around again, but the only thing he saw was a speck of dust floating by. He looked at it very carefully and came to the conclusion that there must be a tiny little creature riding on that dust speck, too small to see.

He gently escorted the speck over to a nice soft clover and helped it to land safe and sound. You see, a person’s a person, no matter their size.

But none of the other animals believed Horton. They thought he was pretty crazy to think there was actually someone on that clover. But no matter how hard they laughed, he maintained what he believed.

Finally he picked the clover and decided to move it to a safer spot. But a monkey swooped down and took the clover, and it ended up being carried away by a bird, who dropped it in the middle of a clover field! Horton got to work sorting through every single clover in the entire field before he found it again.

The animals decided they’d really had enough with Horton’s strange ways, and demanded proof. As it turned out, there wasn’t just one person on the clover, there was a whole city, and they all yelled at the same time. The other animals finally believed, and they left Horton alone after that.

Although, if it were me, I’d move – Horton doesn’t need neighbors like that!
