This Dr. Seuss classic children’s picture book was published in 1990, making it one of the most recent additions to the canon he established.
From the moment I read the first page, I found myself motivated to be up and doing. Dr. Seuss tells us that today is our day, and there’s so much out there for us to see and do. We’ve got feet to carry us and we’ve got brains to point us in the right direction, and all we have to do is use them. As we come to a crossroads, we’ll look down each path and decide which way to turn. We don’t want to go down just any old road – we want the best, and so we’ll keep walking until we find the one that feels right to us.
In some cases, we may choose to leave town, but that’s okay – things happen out there. Things like elephants and big striped tents. Hot air balloons take to the skies, and you’ll be out there in front leading the pack, except for those times when you’ll get hung up in a tree. Things like that do happen, but it’s all about what we do next that determines our destination. As you climb down from the tree that snagged your balloon, you might find yourself in a slump – and slumps are hard to get out of by yourself. It’s dark, and there aren’t any street signs to tell you where you are. And then, if you’re not careful, you’ll end up in the Waiting Place, where everyone just sits around waiting for something to happen.
But you’re not going to let that happen to you! You’re going to find the bright lights and the music. You’re going to shake off the darkness and move forward.
You may sometimes find yourself having to face something that scares you – but you’re going to march right up to it and stare it in the face. You’re going to move mountains, you really are! Now get out there and find the mountain with your name on it!
Wow – what a pep talk. I think I’ll go slay some dragons now! Wanna come with me? I’m sure there are some dragons out there for you, too.
