Tuesday marks the first anniversary of “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin’s tragic death off the Great Barrier Reef. You’ll recall the animal activist was killed when a stingray barb pierced his chest while he was taping a segment for his wildlife show.
In the months since Irwin’s death, his 9-year-old daughter Bindi has made headlines picking up where he left off. Proving that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree Irwin’s daughter has morphed into “Bindi the Jungle Girl” and now stars in a TV show bearing the same title. “Jungle Girl” Bindi lives in a tree house and hangs out with wildlife.
And when she’s not trying to save animals and the environment the young girl is unveiling a new children’s clothing line. According to tween Irwin, the Bindi Wear International Fashion Line is dedicated to carry on her father’s legacy. The collection includes T-shirts, jumpers, swimwear, sleepwear, hats, bags and shoes, all of which are made of organic materials and carry environmental messages. Even the tags and soles of the shoes are constructed from recycled products. What’s more, 100 percent of the profits earned from the new clothing line will be used to support Australia Zoo’s conservation programs.
Bindi says she was inspired to create the new fashion line for children to promote animal rights awareness:
“These are clothes with a message. We’re getting just further and further away from animals. If we keep making them into boots, bags and belts what are we going to be left with?”
The Bindi Wear International Fashion Line features more than 100 pieces designed especially for newborns to 10-year-olds. The clothing line will sell at medium to high-end department stores and boutiques.
When she’s not helping design and promote her new clothing line, “Bindi the Jungle Girl” says she keeps busy meeting “important people” (she recently met with the Dalai Lama) and keeping her 3-year-old brother Bob out of her tree house.
