Dress Up Your Dressers, Part I

If you are planning to update a bedroom, consider dressing up existing dressers instead of replacing them. If you can avoid purchasing large pieces of furniture, you will have more money to spend on decorative items like bedding and window treatments, as well as fun stuff like accessories.

If your existing dressers are still functional and they are not intricately detailed to the point that they cannot be blended with the updated style, freshen them up instead of buying new ones.

Try these simple fixes:

One option is to paint the frame of the dresser one color and use a contrasting color for the top and the drawer fronts. Sand the dresser until the gloss from previous paint or stain is removed and the surface is slightly rough so the new paint will adhere properly.

Wipe away any sanding residue with a damp cloth or tack cloth. Remove the drawers and the drawer pulls. Be sure to keep the drawer pulls and hardware in a safe place. Paint the frame first and while it dries, paint the drawer fronts then move on to the top. Make sure the fronts are completely dry before replacing pulls and the frame is completely dry before replacing drawers.

To add even more interest, use stencils for a decorative touch or personalize the dresser. If you have more than one dresser in the room, you can add extra contrast by painting each dresser opposite of the other. For example, paint the first frame white and the top and drawer fronts purple then paint the other frame purple and the top and fronts white. This works especially well, where children share a room. Each child’s dresser can be distinctively different, while still tying in to the rest of the decor.

If you are adding several new colors to a room, another fun look is to paint the dresser frame white and paint the drawer fronts in assorted colors.
