Dress Up Your Dressers, Part II

There are plenty of other great ways to dress up your dressers besides those that were mentioned previously. While some involve paint or painting techniques, others require very little effort. One example is replacing the drawer pulls to freshen up the look. Adding updated hardware can change the look and feel of the piece more than you might think.

There are also other painting techniques you can use, and paint is of course one of the simplest, least expensive ways to dress up any space or furnishing. We already talked about contrasting paint jobs, but painting the entire dresser all one color that coordinates with the new design plan is also effective, as is some simple sponge painting. For painting projects, begin by sanding the dresser and wiping away sanding residue as directed in the previous article.

Whisking is a fun, easy method that will add some texture. Paint the drawer fronts the same color as the dresser frame and allow them to dry. Once dry, apply another color with a clean whiskbroom. To create a dramatic effect, use a contrasting color. For a more subtle effect choose a color a shade or two lighter or darker than the frame color.

Dip the broom into paint, brushing off excess, and paint the drawer front with the broom from left to right, top to bottom, or diagonally, whichever you prefer. For even more interest, add another coat moving in the opposite direction. If you whisk from top to bottom and apply the second coat side to side, you will create a nice crisscross pattern that resembles wicker.

You can also use wallpaper to dress up the top and drawer fronts, or apply leftover pieces of wallpaper border. Creating one focal wall with wallpaper then using the same paper on a dresser across the room is a good way to sprinkle color, pattern, or texture around the room to keep things cohesive.
