Dressing a Daughter’s Room 2

pink flower Are you ready for the next step in dressing up my daughter’s room? Previously, I talked about the elements of my daughter’s room and what we have done so far, such as the colors and the furniture. Now, I’ll talk about how we went about choosing custom curtains to dress both her windows and the closet door. if you missed the previous post in this series, just click here: Dressing a Daughter’s Room

So, now we are ready to move on to picking out the curtains. The first thing we did, of course, was to take measurements of the windows and door. We measured the width and height of the windows. We included measurements from the top of the window frame to the sill and then again to below the trim on the sill. We also made note of any furniture placed by the window, in the case of my daughter’s room this was a wide six-drawer dresser.

We measured the door in much the same way, except that we took into consideration a bit of trim on the front of the closet. Had this piece of trim not been there, we would probably have added it. The trim will hide the curtain rod that will be mounted in the closet. The curtain will hang down on the inside of the closet instead of over the outside trim. So, we measured from the top of the rod to the floor here.

Dressing a door has a few other considerations. Will the curtain be closed or open most of the time. Since we hope to keep my daughter’s closet neat and organized, with pretty dresses hanging from the clothing rod, we are choosing to keep the curtain open with the option to close it when needed. This means that we will need to mount hooks for tie-backs on the sides of the trim of the closet, or chose either rings or tabs for the rod to make sliding the curtain open much easier. There is also the option of a rod pocket for a mount or using pinch pleats.

A rod pocket or pinch pleats in this case would not be practical. I’ll tell you why along with explaining the different options for hanging curtains in the next installment! Of course I’ll share which option we choose. Check back later.
