Just how do you pick out curtains for a little girl’s room? Hopefully you have been following my adventure. I talked about how we’ve gone about getting ready for custom curtains, including measuring and the different ways that curtains can be hung. We are planning for window curtains and curtains over the closet instead of a door. We decided to go with a ring system for the window curtains. For the closet, we chose short tabs. Originally, we were looking at rod pockets for both area, but we decided that this way of hanging the curtains wouldn’t work.
In the case of a rod pocket, there would some bunching of curtain above the rod, and in the close (tight) space of the closet, this would not work. A rod pocket system also makes it harder to open and close the curtains. We chose short tabs that would not be seen from outside of the closet, and curtains that come in two panels. For the windows, we choose rings to make the curtains open and close easily, and to make them more durable, since the rings will protect the fabric from long term use on the rod.
After taking all of the measurements, we headed out to Lancaster, Pa. This is Amish country, and a great place to find fabrics of all kinds from dress fabrics to quilting fabrics. We browsed through an Amish-owned fabric shop, and I picked out five different fabrics that I thought might work: a delicate variegated pink rose pattern, pink outlined flowers on a white background and its opposite white outlines flowers on a pink background, a thin candy strip with two different pink stripes and a white stripe, and an an oddball, a dragonfly pattern on a light purple background that sparkled. This last had the requisite pink as well as greens and blues, the colors of the two chairs in the room. It might also go with the whimsical creatures that adorned my daughter’s wall near the light switch.
