Drew Carey’s Scary Connection To Owen Wilson

Drew Carey and Owen Wilson have more in common than most fans are aware of. Their connection goes well beyond being in the same income tax bracket or sharing the same set of wheels. According to Carey, the two celebrities share a bond that goes much deeper than anything material.

In a revealing interview with TV’s “Access Hollywood” Carey admitted that he could relate to Wilson’s recent attempt to take his own life better than just about anyone because he too tried to kill himself–twice.

The new host of “The Price is Right” says his suicide attempts included swallowing pills when he was 18 and again when he was in his twenties.

Carey says his past experiences allow him to view Wilson’s recent hospitalization in a way others can’t.

“It’s going to sound cold, but I wasn’t reading the paper going ‘Oh poor guy.’ I was thinking I hope he’s learning what he is supposed to be learning from this whole experience and not wasting the opportunity to learn,” Carey told the TV show.

You’ll recall that police classified Wilson’s trip to the emergency room in August as “an attempted suicide.”

Carey says he knows what it feels like to be in Wilson’s shoes.

“I was depressed for a long time,” the 49-year-old comedian said. “I learned how to believe in myself. Learned how to set goals, you know, self help books man. I just read every single one I can get a hold of and I still do. I read that stuff all the time still. I am always coming out bigger, better, stronger and happier.”

Carey added that life in the media spotlight can get overwhelming at times and it can lead a person to distance themselves from those who aren’t in the business. The ex-sitcom star says doesn’t know exactly what caused Wilson to try to take his own life, but speculates that the feeling of being “disconnected from the real world” is enough to dry a person over the edge.

The funnyman and ex-sitcom star says he is glad Wilson was able to pull himself back from “the dark side” and hopes he will be able to concentrate on living one day at a time.
