Drew The Cover Girl

I wonder if I’m the only one who is surprised with the celebrities CoverGirl cosmetics chooses to be their newest faces? Surprised–in a good way. For example, Queen Latifah, Molly Sims and R&B star Rihanna were all recently named as CoverGirl spokes models. Now a former wild child (of sorts) is joining the cosmetics sorority.

CoverGirl just announced that actress Drew Barrymore is joining the ranks of Cheryl Tiegs, Rachel Hunter, Christie Brinkley, and Tyra Banks to become the newest radiant face of the popular cosmetics company. According to the company, the 32-year-old actress just wrapped up the CoverGirl spots that will appear in TV and print ads starting January 2008.

“I am honored to be associated with a brand that has been at the forefront of their industry for almost 55 years,” Barrymore said in a release. “CoverGirl had managed to change with the times, yet stay in touch with women of all ages and backgrounds.”

What makes Barrymore’s pick as the latest CoverGirl model even more noteworthy is the fact that the actress is going behind the camera to direct the commercials. It is a first for the child star and a first for the company that has never had one of their cover girls appear on both sides of the camera.

“Drew is a wonderful addition to the CoverGirl family and her role – both in front of the camera and behind the scenes as co-creative director – is new and different for the cosmetics industry,” company executives told news reporters.

What I also find interesting about Barrymore— the cover girl– is that her past (we’ve all read about her misadventures as a kid growing up in Hollywood–she had a bumpy adolescence to say the least) is staying… well, in the past. These days Barrymore is better known for her work as an avid volunteer with the United Nations Food Program than she is for her failed marriages and history with drugs and alcohol.

On a side note, if you remembered that Barrymore was featured in an advertising campaign prior to her CoverGirl gig—-give yourself a pat on the back. You’re right, back in 1993, at the age of 18, Barrymore posed for Guess Jeans and later went on to become the face of Missoni.
