Drop-Side Cribs

Before we could be licensed as foster parents, we had to have beds for the children we were taking into our home. Our age range was zero to five. We decided that cribs that converted to beds were best. That way we could change the bed style depending on the child.

I started shopping for cribs. I was always a fan of sleigh beds, so loving sleigh cribs made sense. I worried, though, that I wouldn’t be able to lay down a sleeping child or pick up one in distress. I am very short and the thought of using a step stool to navigate the crib was not appealing.

With my Baby Bargains book in hand my husband’s parents and I set out to find furniture. We ended up going back and forth between Lone Star Baby & Kids and Babies R Us. Ultimately we got two beautiful cribs from a highly rated manufacturer at Long Star Baby & Kids.

I loved these cribs. Chris did a great job putting them together. They were beautiful in the room. The changing table dresser we got at Once Upon a Child complemented them nicely and my sister bought us the matching dresser.

Now I have two gorgeous expensive cribs that I cannot do anything with. My cribs are drop-side cribs. While the model has not been recalled, drop-side cribs are no longer sold. We cannot sell the cribs to Once Upon a Child and I don’t know if we’ll find a buyer on CraigsList.

We do not use the drop sides because they do not work. The feature I bought the cribs for stopped working the first year. Still they’ve done great for us for almost four years. I am surprised that DPFS has not required us to replace them. I’m sure they will.
