DVD Review: Healing Yoga for Aches and Pains

Yoga has been used for centuries to improve health and treat a variety of health conditions. Yoga is an excellent holistic treatment for a variety of aches and pains, including neck, back and arthritis pain. The DVD Healing Yoga for Aches and Pains is a gentle practice for pain management.

Healing Yoga for Aches and Pains is created by Charles and Lisa Matkin, who are experienced in therapeutic yoga. The couple has taught therapeutic yoga at New York area hospitals and works with physicians to help patients recovering from illness or injury. This DVD is designed for people suffering with pain as a result of arthritis, neck pain, back pain or injuries.

The practice is 30 minutes long and the pace of the practice is similar, or even slightly slower, than a beginner’s hatha yoga class. The asanas used in this class are basic yoga poses, not advanced or complicated asanas, so they are accessible to people new to the practice of yoga. The classic yoga asanas are modified to fit the needs of people recovering from illness or injury.

Of course, if you are experiencing pain in certain areas, it may take you longer to move in and out of the poses. Take your time and move according to your own pace and level of flexibility. Remember, it is always OK to stop and take a break for a moment, if needed.

In addition to beneficial asanas for pain management, the instructors focus on the breath and relaxation. The movements are coordinated with the breath and breath is used to relax into the poses. This is helpful for people with any type of chronic pain, since tension in the muscles only exacerbates pain.

The practice on this DVD is designed to be gentle for people with injuries or illnesses that require a gentle and effective practice. For this reason, it is suitable for most people looking for pain management for mild to moderate pain. However, because each injury and illness is unique, you should check with your doctor before adding yoga to your routine.
