DVD Review: The Perfect Workout: The Joy of Yoga and Fat Burning Yoga

If you practice yoga, you know that some days you want a more intense workout, while other days you need a gentle stretch. The problem with many DVDs is you get either a vigorous or gentle practice.

The Perfect Yoga Workout: The Joy of Yoga and Fat Burning Yoga with Sara Ivanhoe contains two practices in one DVD and is a good addition to your DVD collection, if you frequently practice at home and like variety.

Fat Burning Yoga is a good workout and you will feel like you worked out when you are finished. However, it isn’t as intense as a power yoga class and you don’t have to be advanced, or even intermediate level to follow the practice.

The fat burning practice uses a range of poses, a faster pace, more upbeat music and more intense vinyasa flow sequences. It is a good total body workout, if you are using yoga as part of a weight loss and toning routine.

The Joy of Yoga is a traditional, gentle stretch yoga practice. Although the practice is basic and good for beginners, it is great for more advanced students who want a laid back, gentle stretch practice for those days when you are stiff and just need a gentle stretch that is not too fast paced.

This practice gives the entire body a great stretch and is great for releasing tension and relaxation, as well as the broad variety of health benefits yoga provides. The asanas used in this practice include standing poses, forward bends, twists, lunges and vinyasa flow sequences.

Although one practice is more intense and the other more relaxing, both are appropriate for anyone, regardless of the level of experience. The poses can be modified to fit the needs of the individual person.

In both practices, Ivanhoe leads a small group of women of varying levels from beginners to advanced practitioners. These women perform the asanas with various modifications, so you can follow the person closest to your individual fitness level.

If you practice at home, variety is important. Having several types of yoga practices helps you stay interested and avoid boredom that can result from the identical practice every day. This combination DVD is a great addition to any collection for the variety it offers, as well as the clear instructions from Sara Ivanhoe.
