Earth Day & Planetary Fitness!

Have you asked yourself what you can do to improve planetary fitness? Remember, part of fitness is looking at the whole body and the whole self. Like other observational holidays, Earth Day is designed to help us recognize and remember how we should behave the rest of the year.

In honor of Earth Day, be sure to do one or all of the following:

  • Sleep – Seriously, make sure you get 8 hours of good, restful sleep today. Whether it’s going to bed a little early or getting up a little later, sleep. Sleep is a restorative for your body. The Earth slumbers during winter months, allowing its own energy stores to be replenished, including water. So take the time today and sleep.
  • Your Day In the Garden – Spend time today in your garden. There might be some weeds you can pull, some roses you can trim, some hedges that need to be pruned or just sit and soak up the peace and beauty that is in your garden. If you don’t have a garden, check out the local park or arboretum. Want to know why hugging a tree can make you feel better? Hugging a tree helps you to be at peace, rest and reduce your natural stress as you take some quiet time out of the day.
  • Check Your Batteries – Check out the batteries in your gear whether it’s your exercise bike or your flashlight. Consider picking up some rechargeable batteries. You keep your equipment up to speed, but you are not throwing away common batteries that have heavy toxic metals and can damage the environment.
  • Solar Options – Invest in a little sunlight. We worry a great deal about sunburns, but the sun is vital to our growth and health. Let the sun into your home, spend some time in the sun (wear sun block) or check out a solar powered fountain or lamps for your yard. Not only do you make the area pretty, you conserve energy.

Make Earth Day a day to observe some changes in your personal fitness and lifestyle. It can help the environment internally and externally. How will you honor Earth Day and yourself today?
