Fill your Easter Baskets this years with plenty of good stuff for a fraction of the price you paid the year before.
On Easter morning, I always proudly look at the beautiful baskets laying in wait on the table. What a bounty. But then, a few days later, I am always disheartened. A lot of money was spent, and yet, there is little to show for it. The cheap toys have broken, the candy was too much and a lot of it had to be given away and the garbage can got filled with Easter grass and packaging.
This year, I vow to get more for my money when it comes to the Easter Baskets. Here is how.
Stay Away from Pre-Made Baskets
Pre-made Easter baskets can be convenient, but they are usually deceiving, loaded with mostly paper and cardboard filler to make it seem like you are getting more than you actually are. Once those baskets are unwrapped, you can quickly see how little is actually in them.
Avoid Easter Grass
Speaking of fillers, Easter grass is ridiculous. Why pay for something that is going to be thrown away. Either save and reuse the grass from year to year, or find a substitute. Shredded paper or used tissue paper works well, and the kids won’t care.
You can also make the filler part of the gift. Why not pad the bottom of the basket with tights, socks or t-shirts? You’ll get more for your money that way, and chances are that you had to buy those things anyway.
Buy Good Stuff
This year, I’m thinking outside the basket, so to speak. Instead of those little toys and things, it might be a better investment to have presents that make more sense. For example, those colorful vinyl balls come out this time of year. The cost under $2 and get played with for the whole spring and summer.
Other items might include board games, gift cards to an ice cream or pizza place, chalk, etc.
Candy and Sweets
Okay, we really can’t avoid all candy and sweet treats? To get more value from your money, decide what treats would most be missed? Chocolate eggs, Peeps, jelly beans the big chocolate bunny? Pick one or two and then use coupons and sales to get these items for as low a cost as possible. Then fill in the basket with homemade treats if you must.
