Now that you know how to craft simple pompom chicks, consider adding to the family with these adorable Styrofoam chickadees. They are just as kid-friendly as the fuzzy versions, though this craft is better suited for children with longer attention spans and finer dexterity skills. Older kids could easily complete this craft on their own, but an adult should supervise younger children.
STYROFOAM CHICKS
Materials:
Easter basket
Assorted sizes of Styrofoam eggs
Styrofoam block
Toothpicks
Craft paint (yellow, yellow orange, orange, black, white and brown)
Sponge brush
Fine point marker
Toothbrush
Florist oasis
Green yarn
Ribbon
Directions:
To create chicks, push a toothpick into the bottom of each egg and place the other end of the toothpick into a Styrofoam block. (This will make it easier to decorate the egg.)
With the sponge brush, paint the eggs with the yellow and yellow orange paint, then let them dry.
Next, add some brown paint with a toothbrush to lightly spatter the paint onto the eggs.
To make the beak, use the orange paint and make a small diamond shape. Next, thin some black paint with water, and then use a brush to apply eyes, wings, and a smile. Or, use the fine tip black marker.
Dot the chick’s eyes with white paint on the end of a toothpick for a more realistic look.
Allow the eggs to dry thoroughly.
To assemble the Easter basket, places a chunk of oasis in the bottom of the basket and cover it with green yarn or fake Easter grass. Add the chicks by sticking the end of the toothpicks into the oasis. Fill in the holes with Easter candy, candles or small toys.
Tie a ribbon to the basket handle and use it to decorate your home or to give as a gift.
