You don’t have to scale back on Thanksgiving decor, just so you can afford to pay for the Turkey Day spread. The following craft projects are not only easy enough for kids to create, but they’ll leave you with plenty of money to spend on an extra pumpkin pie or two:
APPLE TURKEY PLACECARD
Materials (for one turkey):
Googly eyes
Craft glue
Almond (in shell)
Small apple
One Lifesaver candy
Peanut (in shell)
Paper napkin
Small paper clip
Construction paper
Directions:
Glue googly eyes to almond and let dry.
Glue Lifesaver to front of apple and let dry.
Glue almond to Lifesaver and let dry.
Glue peanut below almond—this will be the turkey’s wattle.
Unfold napkin halfway, then fold back and forth accordion (or fan)-style.
Place a paper clip in the center of the folded napkin.
Pull ends of folded napkin together to make a fan and secure with a paper clip at top.
Place napkin behind turkey.
Unbend one end of a paper clip and insert into apple.
Cut a placecard from the construction paper and insert it into the turkey holder.
TISSUE PAPER CORN-ON-THE-COB
Materials:
Poster board
Tissue paper (red, orange, yellow, purple and white)
Craft glue
Natural paper-twist ribbon
Raffia
Directions:
Cut corn-on-the-cob shape from poster board.
Cut sheets of red, orange, yellow, purple and white tissue paper into 4-inch squares and ball up each to form “kernels.”
Glue “kernels” to one side of the corn cutout, making sure to fill it completely.
Cut three 18-inch lengths of paper twist.
Untwist and trim to form husks.
Lay pieces so they overlap and insert tissue paper corn-on-the-cob inside.
Fold over edges at the bottom, twist and tie with raffia.
CORN PLACEMATS
Materials:
Ear of fresh or frozen (thawed) corn
Kitchen knife
Plastic corn-on-the-cob holders
Fabric paint (variety of fall colors: orange, yellow, red, green, etc.)
Paper plates
Cloth placemats
Directions:
Break an uncooked ear of corn into 2 1/2-inch pieces.
Attach plastic corn-on-the-cob holders to the ends of the corn.
Pour fabric paint onto paper plates.
Roll the corn in the paint and then across a cloth placemat. Repeat, overlapping patterns and colors.
Let dry thoroughly before using.
