This year, why not cut your holiday gift budget in half or even more by making some wonderful homemade gifts. Forget the crocheted potholders and the macaroni art, the following popular gifts will be appreciated and used. In fact, they are so popular, you might even find a couple of them among the gifts that you get!
Baked Gifts
From cookie platters to quick breads, baked goods can certainly hit the spot during the holidays. Pick up some inexpensive dishes, loaf pans and other containers at your local thrift store. Pretty containers that your gift recipient can keep are much nicer than using paper plates and foil. Add some colored plastic wrap and a ribbon to finish the gift.
Gifts in a Jar
Find a couple of gifts in a jar recipes to follow. You can choose everything from cookie mixes to drink mixes to sup mixes. Layer your ingredients in a clear mason jar, adding a bit of pretty scrap fabric (you can buy this in bundles at craft stores) and a ribbon. Mason jars can be found at the grocery store, at thrift stores, at yard sales, or in your own kitchen if you reuse fruit jars and pasta sauce jars.
Gift Baskets
Fill a gift basket with things that you know your gift recipient will love. This can include inexpensive store bought items, such as for a movie basket, or homemade items, such as apple butter, homemade pancake mix, etc.
Gift baskets can be made for any budget. The most expensive part is the basket, and you can often find these on sale at craft stores, or again, at the thrift store.
You can get very creative here with this type of gift. How about a cozy winter evening gift that includes an inexpensive throw ($2 at the discount store), a good book (a quarter from a library sale or yard sale), some hot coco (homemade is even cheaper) or tea, etc.?
