We have done the baby food jar thing in Kid’s Crafts before (see related article listed below), but we can use them in Home and Garden too. These little jars are just too handy for seasonal and holiday decorating projects. They are just right for a few of the fall decorating ideas that I would like to share.
First, make sure baby food jars are clean and dry. Then, pick an idea from below and get started:
Candleholders
Put a medium sized taper candle into a baby food jar. Hold it in place so it’s standing up straight, or get somebody to hold it for you. Next, fill the jar up with acorns or other nuts and seeds that you have collected. Pack as many as you can into the jar, to keep the candle where you want it.
For a different look, place tea candles in the bottom of four or five baby food jars. Line them up along the center of a table. Wind strings of silk autumn leaves in and out between the jars. Tuck some pinecones or pretty fall flowers into the gaps.
Birdfeeders
As the weather gets cooler, our feathered friends will once again be looking for a snack. Just bend some light wire around the mouth of a baby food jar. Twist the ends tightly to keep the wire snugly in place. Now, make a handle from another piece of wire. Bend it and then twist one end around the ring on the mouth of the jar, and twist the other end around it on the other side. It should look almost like the handle on a pail and should be stiff. Fill the jar with birdseed and hang it from a tree or fence post where you can watch the birds eat.
You can use the same method to make hanging candles for your patio or garden.
