If you want to mow your lawn and be kind to the environment, the only way to achieve those goals is to look into alternatives to the traditional gas mower. Here are four options to look into for eco-friendly mowing. And if you want to learn more about the impact of a gas mower as well as trading it in, click here: Eco-Friendly Mowing
Go for an electric mower
Yes, it does still use up energy, but the impact to the environment is much less than that of a gas-powered mower. You will need to get used to using the cord, and this type of mower may not be right for all yards, depending on the size of the yard, the location of outlets and any obstacles that might be in the way. Expect to pay anywhere from $200 to $300 for an electric mower. Sears makes a Craftsman model that is quite good.
Lose the cord
Cordless lawn mowers do run on electricity, but instead of having to drag a cord around your yard, you simply recharge the lawn mower’s rechargeable battery. Most cordless lawn mowers will allow you to mow a yard of less than 8,000 square feet on one charge. Cordless lawn mowers are not the best choice for sloping lawns because they are usually not self propelled and can be heavy. Expect to pay between $475 and $750.
Manual model
If you want to have the least impact on the Earth, opt for a manual power mower. A reel mower uses no energy but your own, which means that you are not only saving the planet, but you are getting some great exercise, too. There are several models of reel or push mowers that are available, and most of these cost less than $100. Look to American Land Mower for a good brand.
The power of the sun
In the latest and greatest category are solar powered motors that run on a battery that is charged by sunlight. You get a powered mower with zero energy cost. The current model will even mow the law for you unattended, using sensors to navigate your lawn. There are at least two downsides to the solar lawn mower, such as availability (no solar mowers are available in the united states, although you can purchase one directly from Sweden) and these mowers are quite expensive: $2,500 not including shipping.
