If their union was legal the news could put them in the record books… then again this is Hollywood were talking about.
Just two weeks after Eddie Murphy and Tracey Edmonds rang in 2008 by hosting a lavish multi-million dollar sunset vow exchange on a private island off Bora Bora in French Polynesia the two have reportedly called it quits.
Murphy made the news official via this statement to the media:
“After much consideration and discussion, we have jointly decided that we will forego having a legal ceremony as it is not necessary to define our relationship further. While the recent symbolic union in Bora Bora was representative of our deep love, friendship and respect that we have for one another on a spiritual level, we have decided to remain friends.”
What is it about celebrities that make them feel obligated to sugarcoat a break-up? Who are they kidding?
Murphy and Edmonds got “married” (though not legally– since the couple’s nuptials took place in a foreign country, the ceremony was purely ceremonial) in this romantic shindig put together by the ultimate star wedding planner–Colin Cowie–in which they professed their undying love for one another, and then they have a huge fight and Edmonds bails on Murphy. THEN, they try to spin the split so that it appears as though they are still “friends” who respect and “love” each other.
Give me a break. I bet the only talking these two do now is through their reps to ensure Edmonds gets back the personal items she left at Murphy’s house.
Adding insult to injury is the fact that after the official announcement of the couple’s split went public, friends of the pair started boarding the “I-told-you-so” express.
According to PEOPLE magazine, “sources” say Murphy and Edmonds’ honeymoon got off to a rocky start.
“Eddie started yelling at Tracey in front of people,” one of Edmonds’s wedding guests told the magazine. “He did it on a few occasions and it was very embarrassing.”
The 46-year-old actor who has five children from his previous marriage (and a daughter from Melanie “Scary Spice” Brown) and 40-year-old Edmonds, who has two children from her previous marriage to singer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds originally said they planned to have a legal ceremony in the United States, but that obviously won’t be happening.
Murphy and Edmonds started dating in the fall of 2006 and got engaged last July. In the meantime, the children of these two stars had reportedly bonded and thought they were going to become one big happy family and now they have to deal with the drama of sorting through not one, but two failed unions by their respective parents.
