All of us with preschoolers are concerned with literacy. We want our children to read well and enjoy it. However, teaching a child to read seems like an overwhelming tasks filled with daunting lessons. How do you teach a child how to read? The feelings come from a fear that we will not teach our children correctly and in doing so doom them forever to a life without the love of books. Well, take a breath and let me introduce you to a site that will help your child learn to read in a fun way.
Starfall is one of my favorite preschool sites on the internet. The site is focused on teaching preschoolers phonics and early reading skills all the way through reading independently. The site has fun games yet it is slow paced and not over stimulating. It is online preschool games at its finest. To make it truly a blessing the site is also free and void of shameless advertisements you would rather your child not view. Starfall does have a store for purchasing materials. However, the materials are not essential to using the free site or getting the most out of the online lessons. In addition, there is no need to register or share any of your information to use the service.
The first step is learning the ABC’s. Once your child masters this skill through phonics games your child will be introduced to learning to read through simple words. Your child will learn to read from online books like Zac the Rat. After a series of books the progression leads to more complex books. In addition, the site offers plenty of fun games that reinforce basic lessons and phonics. My preschooler loves the gingerbread game where she can choose eyes, nose, mouth, and buttons for her gingerbread man. Starfall is a great introduction to phonics and reading for your little one.
