I have to admit that when I think of Disney, one of the last things that comes to mind is “dance party.” But the Disney Parks specialize in trying to bring their guests every entertainment, and dancing the night away is no exception.
Of course, this being Disney, if Imagineers can wrangle a tie-in to one of the company’s movies, they will. This December sees the highly anticipated release of the decades-in-the-making sequel to “Tron”: “Tron Legacy.”
To drum up buzz for the film’s December 17 release, the Disney Parks blog announces “ElecTRONica,” Disneyland California Adventure’s newest party zone, opening tonight. Spelling that makes me cringe aside, ElecTRONica sounds neat, even though I’m not really a nightclub person.
What I do like, however, is an arcade and ElecTRONica’s got plenty of them. In fact, the club will feature a replica of Flynn’s Arcade from the “Tron” films. Eighties-style video arcade? I’m there.
See, ElecTRONica caters to the whole family. I call it a “club” for lack of any better word. The official announcement is vague on what, exactly, the thing is, using unspecific nouns like “experience” when referring to it. I think the most precise description given is “nighttime dance party,” and since that’s a mouthful I’m shortening it to “club,” which I’m sure many will agree is a fitting definition of “nighttime dance party.”
But as implied above, expect more from ElecTRONica than a packed room full of pounding music and strobe lights. I imagine there must be a dance hall somewhere in the club (for lack of a better term), but as it’s meant as a family-friendly experience, it’s likely kept rather tame.
Because on top of Flynn’s Arcade, ElecTRONica also offers an additional “Tron”-themed video gaming area, as well as face painting and live entertainers. Actually, it’s starting to sound like ElecTRONica is some sort of gaming-themed carnival that happens to have a dance section.
I admit I’m rather perplexed as to why ElecTRONica is supposedly only open at night if the real emphasis is not the dancing but the video gaming and other family-friendly activities. I mean, maybe the dancing is meant for the whole family, but I can’t imagine many kids whose attentions will be held by that for long. When the dancing part is described as including lasers and glow accessories, my mind instantly goes more towards “rave” than “fun for the whole family.”
But details on ElecTRONica are scant, even though it opens today. If anyone can make the whole dance party thing, strobe lights included, work for the whole family, it’s Disney. ElecTRONica only switches on Fridays-Sundays this fall, so if you’re around Anaheim and curious, check it out now. I’m sure if it’s popular enough Disneyland will bring it back again, but at the moment it’s a limited-time only experience.
