Eleven More Ways to Memorialize Your Pet

  1. Plant a tree, shrub, or special flowerbed in memory of your pet. Mark the site with a plaque or statue. An engraved plaque can hold your pet’s name, date of birth or date of adoption, and other important information.
  2. Have a favorite picture of your lost pet printed on a mug, t-shirt, watch, or just about anything! Try CafePress for a lot of different options for imprintables.
  3. If you have kept your pet’s remains, display them in a place of honor in your home or office.
  4. You may also choose to bury or scatter your pet’s cremains in a place that was special to both of you.
  5. Mix your pet’s ashes into the soil of a potted plant so that your pet (and plant) can always come with you when you move.
  6. Celebrate the anniversary of the day you and your pet first met. Look at pictures, visit your favorite spots, or enjoy your favorite treats. My Miko used to enjoy a vanilla ice cream cone every year on April 25th, his “gotcha” day. You can also celebrate the anniversary of your pet’s death if you choose.
  7. Name a star after your pet! Contact the International Star Registry (800-282-3333) to pick a star to memorialize your pet. You will receive a map of the sky to help you find your friend’s special star.
  8. Save a bit of your friend’s fur in a special locket or keep a clipping in a small container in your purse or pocket.
  9. Celebrate National Pet Memorial Day on the second Sunday in September. This is another great opportunity to look through pictures of your lost friend and remember all the wonderful times you had together.
  10. Buy a statue or stuffed animal that reminds you of your pet and put your pet’s collar around its neck.
  11. Light a candle on Monday nights. Grieving pet owners around the country will be lighting candles with you: the Monday Candle Ceremony was started on the internet to bring support, love, light, and healing to those who have lost a pet. Light your candle at 10pm Eastern/7pm Pacific.
