She is a talk show host, she’s an “American Idol” judge, and now Ellen DeGeneres is a comic book hero.
You may have known for years that Ellen is a loyal advocate of animal rights. She has supported the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign, the Farm Sanctuary, Heifer International, the Society for Animal Protective Legislation, and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). She helped in getting California’s Proposition 2, which prohibited abusive confinement of farm animals, passed in 2008.
DeGeneres is now being featured in the Bluewater Productions’ comic book series, Female Force. The comic book talks about DeGeneres’ upbringing in New Orleans, including her dream of becoming a veterinarian as a child. It also covers her rise as a comedienne, her success on television, her 2008 marriage to Portia De Rossi (which included their dogs), and her love of animals.
Written by Sandra C. Ruckdeschel and penciled by Pedro Ponzo, the comic book is available for sale at Barnes & Noble, Borders, Books-A-Million, and online at Amazon for $3.99. A portion of the proceeds (30% of the net profit) of the comic book will go to the HSUS. The Chief Operating Officer of the HSUS, Michael Markarian, said, “Ellen has been a leading force for animal protection issues.”
DeGeneres and De Rossi were given the HSUS Wyler Award in 2009. Named after Broadway headliner and animal activist Gretchen Wyler, the Wyler Award is to honor celebrities who have made news on behalf of animals. DeGeneres just received the HSUS Genesis Award for Best Talk Show when she aired an episode about the inhumane treatment of farm animals.
In being featured in the comic book series, DeGeneres is in the company of many other influential females including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, First Lady Michelle Obama, and Oprah Winfrey.
