She was joking… about the cake topper… not about the wedding.
Ellen DeGeneres has another reason to celebrate today. In addition to being “over the moon” about her upcoming nuptials to partner Portia de Rossi, the actress walked away with her fourth trophy as outstanding talk-show host, at last night’s 35th annual Daytime Emmy Awards.
And according to DeGeneres, don’t look for her to pull an Oprah and take herself of contention for future statuettes.
“I’m not going to take my name out,” DeGeneres deadpanned with reporters backstage. “Oprah has made so many bad choices. Look at her career.”
While DeGeneres walked away with another Emmy for outstanding talk show host her show was shut out by rookie Rachael Ray. The celebrity chef turned talk show host cooked up a surprising win in the talk show category.
For those of you keeping track this year marks the 11th consecutive loss for the ladies of ABC’s “The View” in the best talk show host category. But ABC wasn’t completely shut out. “General Hospital,” which just celebrated its 45th anniversary, was honored with a record-breaking 10th drama Daytime Emmy. In addition, Anthony Geary, who plays Luke Spencer on the mega-popular daytime serial, took the lead actor honor, while 79-year-old Jeanne Cooper, who I have watched on CBS'”The Young and the Restless” for more than 20 years finally won lead actress. (Incidentally, Cooper has been nominated for a lead actress Emmy eight times but had never won until last night.)
Getting back to Emmy winner DeGeneres, she told reporters backstage at the awards that she and de Rossi have set a wedding date, but would not reveal when and where the ceremony would take place. She did, however, say that the wedding would be “a doozy.”
DeGeneres revealed that she plans to fly the entire de Rossi family in from Australia for the couple’s “dream wedding” and that “incredible people” would sing at the ceremony. The actress turned daytime gabber also let slip that she would show “a tiny bit” of the nuptials on her talk show.
