If you were alive during the 80s (and even if you weren’t) you may remember Emilio Estevez best as wrestler Andy Clark in The Breakfast Club. He was the typical jock in a movie that served as a high school microcosm of teenage angst. Emilio was officially a member of what was dubbed the Brat Pack, a group of young actors noted for starring together in movies that would forever define a decade.
However, being a member of the Brat Pack did not come without some backlash. In the days before Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan ruled Hollywood nightlife, the Brat Pack was seen as just that – a bunch of brats. However, some of them, such as Demi Moore, did go on to superstardom. Others, like Molly Ringwald, have struggled to regain their teenage success.
Emilio Estevez seems to fall somewhere in the middle. He had a few hit movies after his Brat Pack days with Stakeout (co-starring Richard Dreyfuss) and Young Guns, which co-starred a myriad of young and upcoming actors.
But for about four years, Emilio was off the Hollywood radar. Then he had a “comeback” of sorts with The Mighty Ducks movie. But other than the two sequels to that, we did not hear much from him in the 90s.
Lately, Emilio has focused as much on directing as acting. His both stars in and directs his latest film, Bobby, about the assassination of Senator Robert Kennedy. In Italy for the showing of the film at the Venice Film Festival, Emilio announced he was engaged to journalist Sonja Magdevski. The couple has been dating for almost two years, but no wedding date is set.
This will be Emilio’s second marriage. He married American Idol’s Paula Abdul in 1992 but that union ended after two years. Emilio was briefly engaged to Demi Moore during the 80s.
Do you have a favorite Emilio Estevez movie? Mine would have to be Young Guns. I loved him as Billy the Kid!
