End Of Life Choices

Well my last entry was definitely a downer sorry about that. The fact is when you are facing a potentially terminal illness these thoughts do enter your head. Fighting this disease is extremely hard and even though you go through the surgeries, chemo therapy and radiation the reality is there is still the chance that you will still lose your fight with cancer.

Did you know that out of the 50 states in America that only two allow doctor assisted suicide? Only Oregon and Washington have it legalized so that a doctor can assist a person in the ending of their lives. Before the doctor is allowed to do so a team of physicians has reviewed the patients’ medical history, counseled that person and it is determined that the person will be dying because of their disease. Then and only then can they legally and with little or no pain help the person leave their world of pain and suffering.

Of the other 48 state 34 make it clearly a criminal act for anyone including a physician to assist in a person’s death. Nine states punish under common law any assisted suicide; three states have removed the common law punishments and don’t have punishments for assisted deaths. A few other states do not have laws permitting or criminalizing the act. Should the other states consider this take a look at this and determine if they should revise their laws? Should every person facing an inevitable death and the pain that goes with it have the right to die with dignity and end their suffering?

In a country that is based on personal freedoms why is it that the choice to either faces a long painful death or be allowed the chose the terms and time at which your life should end be taken away from you?

About Tammy Woolard

My name is Tammy and I am 40 year old mother of 3 wonderful children who came to us through domestic adoption. Although we did not have any fertility issues we chose adoption because there are so many kids that did not ask to be born but truly want a family to love. We did research on adoption choices and decided on domestic adoption through CPS. You would be surprised the differences between each agency. The adoption process is nothing like you see in the movies. I am also a 5 year breast cancer survivor. When I was diagnosed my kids were 3, 5 and 7 I did so much research I may have driven my Dr. a little crazy but that is ok it is my body not his.
