I’d Marry You with the Ring from a Cracker Jack Box
A young man and his beloved had been discussing marriage. They decided to wait since they still had much to accomplish and neither one had much money in savings or had a high paying job. Every few months, they would discuss it, again deciding to wait.
Steven told Anna that he wouldn’t propose until he could at least afford a proper engagement ring. She said it didn’t matter, she’d proudly wear a ring right out of a Cracker Jack box as long as it was from him.
One night at dinner, Steven handed Anna a box of Cracker Jack. “Open it.”
Inside he had placed a dime store ring, which she held up, asking, “Does this mean what I think it means?”
Steven told her to close her eyes and make a wish and maybe it would come true. He held out his hand for the ring, and she gave it to him. She closed her eyes and held out her hand, waiting for the ring to be slipped over her finger. Steven reached across the table, gently grasping her hand in his, and slipped the ring into place.
“Will you marry me?”
“Of course I will,” Anna said with a glowing smile and eyes brimming with tears of joy.
“You don’t mind the ring?”
“It’s from you and that’s all that matters,” she said glancing down at the ring.
Fresh tears came to her eyes as she noticed the diamond ring he had substituted for the dime store trinket. It wasn’t extravagant, but to her it was the most beautiful ring she had ever seen.
