Enjoy Your Day at the Spa Safely

A day at the spa is the perfect way to relax and let the stress melt away. Most spa treatments are completely safe during labor. However, there are a few that should be avoided. Here’s how to enjoy your day of pampering without worrying about your unborn baby.

Before you arrive for your day at the spa, be sure the staff knows you are pregnant. If possible, tell them when you book your appointment. If the day is a gift, call the spa to let them know that you are pregnant. Be sure to mention any other issues, such as morning sickness or an aversion to strong odors. When the staff knows this information, they can avoid using any scents that may contribute to the problem.

The staff at the spa should be well aware of potentially dangerous treatments for pregnant women. All pregnant women should avoid treatments that use heat. This would include tanning beds, hot tubs, saunas and heat wraps. The excessive heat is dangerous to the baby. In addition, time in the tanning bed can make pigment problems, such as the mask of pregnancy much more noticeable.

A massage is a great way to relieve tension and stress. Most spas offer massage to their clients. You want a massage therapist who is trained and experienced in prenatal massage. An experienced person will know to avoid deep massage on the legs, particularly when varicose veins are present. Ask about the person’s experience and qualifications when you book your appointment.

Most other treatments at the spa are perfectly safe for pregnant women. Nearly all spas use herbal, botanical and aromatherapy products in beauty treatments. The vast majority of these are safe for pregnant women. If there are any that should not be used during pregnancy, the staff will be sure to avoid them. This is another good reason to let them know you are pregnant. If you are concerned, remind them when you arrive and ask about the products that will be used during your treatments.

Once you have taken the necessary precautions, relax and enjoy being pampered. A facial, massage and new hairstyle may be just what you need to feel energized and beautiful. Enjoy being pampered while you can. Soon you will be doing the pampering!
