I was shopping three weeks ago at a popular store and was a little surprised. Now maybe it happened last year, but I don’t think so or it would not have struck me so hard. Mind you, it was around the second week in October that this occurred.
While I was making my way around the store shopping for various items for my household I maneuvered my cart around the corner to proceed to the next aisle. As I carefully wheeled my cart around the corner there it was, a Christmas tree. Really, mass merchant chain store? This year you didn’t even wait until the week before Halloween. What is the rush with this?
Now, I am not a fan of Halloween. I never was. I felt silly dressing up as a child and even sillier as an adult. Oh, the candy was great, but that was all. I would trick or treat and run for home where I would remove my silly clothes immediately. I felt like an idiot dressed up as someone that I wasn’t. I guess that I wasn’t very good at pretending to be someone else, I always thought.
I was not concerned with upstaging Halloween at all. It was the future of Thanksgiving that got to me. Hello, it is an important holiday in my eyes. I believe that I could attest for most people that same feeling.
Thanksgiving is for giving thanks. It is not to be taken lightly. Not that most of us are not thankful every day for our many blessings, but this is the official day that we celebrate this. Why must it be overshadowed with Christmas, which is also a deeply important holiday? Can we not just enjoy one holiday at a time?
I understand that many people have limited time in their lives. Shopping, cooking, cleaning all take time, so we must plan ahead, but this far ahead?
I realize that for some people Halloween is not technically considered a holiday, but it is a day that requires many people to prepare for, especially those with children. Mass merchant chain store, please, at least only advance putting out the decorations in your store one special day ahead and not two. This is really disheartening.
