Entertaining Tips: Simple Decorating

Do you wish you could have the perfect tablecloth for every event? Maybe you would also like to have cloth napkins to match. Well, you can make your own very simply, without spending a lot of money, and then you will have several sets to choose from, so you’ll always have the perfect color for every get together.

A new flat twin sheet only costs about $5.00 on sale. All you have to do is trim away the excess, hem the edges, and press the sheet. Use the leftover fabric to make cloth napkins, following the tablecloth method, just on a smaller scale. Select several solid colors and perhaps a few subtle prints and you can make an entire collection of tablecloths and napkins.

Also, look for luxurious fabrics on sale and follow the same process, or use fabric to create placemats, chair covers, or a table runner to anchor your centerpiece. Add some interest or texture by making a large fabric square to place over your tablecloth diagonally, so the underlying color shows around the corners of the table. Lace or beaded trim around the edges of the table square will add a touch of elegance. You can also trim your tablecloths or napkins if desired.

For a simple centerpiece, arrange candles of different heights and thickness and tuck in flowers, grasses, or fillers such as baby’s breath between them.

Try creative new ideas instead of typical service pieces, like heavy glass votive holders in a triangular shape, which can stand alone, or which can be placed side by side to appear as if they are fitted together. Each one can be filled with a different condiments, dips, salad dressings, or relish items, instead of candles. Also, try attractive bar glasses as serving pieces. Fill them with relishes, condiments, or mints, or use them to hold candles.
