Entertaining: Tips for a Last Minute Party

Sometimes, those last minute get-togethers end up being the most fun and the most memorable. A spontaneous, spur of the moment party does not have to be chaotic. Start by keeping things simple and casual, and try some of these tips.

Keep the Guest List Small

A small party that consists of a few close friends and family members can be as enjoyable as a large get-together. In fact, sometimes the more intimate setting will make the event even more memorable. You can share childhood stories or photographs that you might be a little shy about sharing with other acquaintances. You can also get away with keeping this simple and casual with intimates.

Keep the Atmosphere Casual

Have a cookout or simple lunch. Tell guests to feel free to wear shorts and tank tops or whatever they find most comfortable, so they’ll kick back and relax. Serve food outdoors or in the sunroom. Go ahead and use paper plates for easy clean up.

Keep the Menu Simple

To make your own giant sub sandwich, pick up a loaf of Italian bread (un-sliced). Slice it down the center lengthwise. Start by placing cheese on the bottom slice of bread to keep other condiments and toppings from soaking into the bread and making it soggy. Next, add shredded lettuce (instead of adding tomatoes, onions, etc. fill small bowls with these items and let guests add their own). Sprinkle a bit of Italian salad dressing or red wine vinaigrette over the lettuce, if desired. Top the letters with finely shaved layers of ham and turkey or any other meats you choose. Put the sandwich together and cut into sections about 3-4” long.
