Enviga: An Energy Drink That Burns Calories

Enviga, a sparkling green tea marketed by the Coca-Cola Company and Nestle, combines green tea and caffeine to help your body burn calories. It also contains calcium. The 12 ounce cans come in green tea, peach, and berry flavors. Enviga is touted as a safe and gentle way of increasing your metabolism. Drinking three cans of Enviga a day may burn 60 to 100 calories, but it shouldn’t be used to replace meals. The combination for weight loss is well-balanced meals, regular exercise, and Enviga. In a study conducted by Nestle, participants burned an additional 106 calories from consuming the energy drink.

On February 1, 2007, Center for Science in the Public Interest, filed a lawsuit against the Coca Cola Company, Nestle, and Beverage Partners Worldwide to remove the calorie burning claim from Enviga’s label and campaign ads. The consumer group stated that these claims couldn’t be made due to lack of sufficient documented support. Another argument in the lawsuit is that the caffeine content could present health problems for some individuals.

In 2006, Snapple Green Tea was introduced. Like Enviga, the benefits of metabolism boosting EGCG, was used to promote the drink. The same can be said for Celsius which is marketed to people who like soda but want the zing of an energy drink. B.W. Cooper’s BAZZA High-Energy Tea is another energy beverage promoting EGCG. This drink is for the consumers who like green tea but not the taste. Making the connection between energy and burning calories is money in the bank for beverage companies. Do these drinks do as they claim or are consumers being mislead? Is Enviga the answer to increasing your weight loss effort? You’ll have to be the judge. You can purchase it at club stores, supermarkets, drug stores, and convenience stores. It retails for approximately $1.39 per can.
