Every Family Has its Quirks

What seems completely “normal” to my little family might seem a little on the weird side to another family (and vice versa). Instead of trying so hard to be like everyone else or the families we see on television or in magazine, we might be better off celebrating our own unique quirks.

I believe that just like a workplace or a church or a school environment, each family has its own “culture.” This may shift and change over time, but there might also be some quirks and uniqueness’s that remain. I also think there is a difference between traditions and family ceremonies and quirks.

One of the ways that my family quirks show themselves is through language and songs—we tend to have a certain way of saying things and playing with words that is unique to our family and we have a tendency to make songs up for just about every occasion and purpose. When visitors spend any time in our house, one of the things they comment on is how quick and constant the word play, puns, jokes and ditties are in our midst.

I think one of the great and fun things about individual families is all the different quirks we have—whether it is in how we prepare our meals or organize mealtime, how we cope with problems, who does which chores, or our communication styles—the quirks are what add flavor to family life. I know that some of these quirks may be a bit dysfunctional and over time, we may have to let some things go and learn how to be more “functional”—but overall, the family culture can and does prevail.

So, instead of trying hard to make comparisons and make your family fit a preconceived mold or to be like the neighbors—why not foster some appreciation for the quirky individuality that makes your family unique?
