Every Home Should Have One

What is it every home should have? Every home should have a lemon tree.

There’s something about fresh lemon juice that leaves the bottled kind for dead. The smell of fresh lemons in the house is also great. Added to washing or water for washing floors it leaves a lovely, fresh smell.

We have always tried to have a lemon tree. The only place we couldn’t get one to grow was when we lived in Orange and though people suggested the type of lemon that didn’t mind the cold climate, we couldn’t keep one alive. I found it very hard to have to rely on shop bought lemons or bottled juice.
When we moved, the first thing we planted was a lemon tree. We also planted a lime. To date our lemon is doing better than the lime even though they are in almost the same position in the yard.

But some of you could be saying our back yard is too small. Then what about the front lawn? As we were walking recently, we passed a house with a large lemon tree in the front yard. It was laden with lemons. So you end up sharing some with neighbors, or passersby, it’s still worth it. Lemon trees will fruit abundantly.

When we had a large lemon tree in a previous house we were always giving lemons to neighbors. It helps build good relationships. Friends came in for their share, as well as freezing the juice and using those lots or things like lemon butter, lemon meringue pie. Check out my recent recipe for tangy lemon meringue pie.

Even if you live in a unit or have almost no yard, you can still grow a lemon tree in a large container on a patio. You just need a position where it will get sun, and of course you’ll need to water and feed it occasionally. Try it. You’ll love having fresh lemons to use.

Lemon juice is also good for adding to rinse water after washing your hair, especially if you’re blonde. It adds shine and freshness and keeps it blonder.
