Everyone Wants to Feel Popular

Think of some of the successful marketing campaigns you know of—many of them focus on the feeling of popularity: “Everyone’s doing it” and “Get the XYZ that everyone wants!” There is a reason that the media does reports every holiday season about the “most popular toys and gifts”—people respond to it and everyone wants to feel like they are “in with the in crowd.” You can use this human reality in marketing your own home business.

Many, many years ago, when I was first in college, I got a job doing door-to-door fundraising canvassing for a nonprofit organization. Yes, I was one of those fresh-faced young adults with a clipboard going door-to-door in neighborhoods all over my state. It was a perfect job for me at the time since the hours were in the late afternoons and evenings, and allowed me to go to class during the day. And, although the pay was low, it was adequate and I learned some “sales” lessons that I have carried with me to this day. One of the things we were taught to say in our canvassing spiels was “your neighbors are…(signing this position, giving money, etc.)” By telling potential donors that everyone in their neighborhood was on board with our cause, we were trained to tap into that very human desire to be popular and “with the crowd.”

You can use this sort of language in your own promotions. Slogans like, “by popular demand” and “just like your friends” may be well-used, but they work. If you can inject an element of popularity into marketing your products or services, you can encourage prospective clients or customers to jump on board. If people know that you or your products or services are in demand by others, they will be more likely to want to try them out themselves.
