A dentist in ohio announced that he will pay children for their Halloween candy in cash, plus throw a toothbrush in for good measure. As an extra incentive, the dentist, Craig Callen of Mansfield Ohio, will also enter the kids in a drawing to win one of two bikes. The going rate for Halloween candy? Cullen is paying $1 a pound for up to five pounds of candy per kid.
Naturally, you can guess the motivation behind all of this. As a dentist, Callen wants to promote healthy teeth, implying that the excess sweet stuff is better off left out of kids diets.
This brings up an interesting question to ask all of you. What do you do with all of that Halloween candy, both the extra you have left over and the stuff that the kids bring home. After sorting through it all, do you have a feast, give it away, throw it out, or maybe sell it? Do you exchange your kids treats for toys or money toward something they really want? Or do you participate in trick or treating at all?
One of our local Moms Clubs often collects left over Halloween candy and brings it to a local nursing home. The folks there love candy, they tell us.
In the past, we’ve also given the candy to less fortunate families who might not see candy more than once a year.
Another legitimate thing to do with excess Halloween candy is to freeze it and then enjoy it slowly throughout the year instead of in one frenzied night or week. Most candy will last for many months in the freezer. Halloween candy can also been incorporated into many baked goods–Kit-Kat brownies anyone?
So, do you think Cullen will get any takers? Please leave your comments in the comment section.
