A new study shows that individuals, who have a hard time sticking with structured fitness plans, can still reap the benefits of exercise by participating in child-like play.
Researchers maintain that the type of calorie-burning, mind-stimulating play that children often partake in can also benefit older individuals. For example, the study found that tossing a Frisbee, dancing, and rock climbing were some of the most effective ways for adults to incorporate play into their exercise routines. According to the study, which was recently published in the Compendium of Physical Activities, a 150-pound person can burn up to 322 calories by dancing for an hour.
In addition to the physical benefits, the study found that fun activities also help improve brain function, spur creativity and innovation, alleviate stress, and improve social skills in adults.
Researchers say that too often adults view play as something reserved primarily for kids, and consider it a “waste of time.” Health experts are trying to change this view by encouraging adults to make time for play, whether it’s shooting hoops or playing with their kids on the swings.
Other ways to rediscover your inner child and increase your overall physique include taking an outdoor walk and stopping to smell the flowers, running through a sprinkler, or designing a family “playcation.” A simple “playcation” can consist of a day filled with outdoor activities such as swimming, hiking, flying a kite, skipping rope, canoeing, or playing flag football.
Experts say the goal is to stay fit while having fun. Do not get caught up in whether you win or lose, rather focus on enjoying the game and burning calories. Child’s play is the perfect anecdote for people whose exercise routine starts to feel more like a chore than an enjoyable activity.
