It ain’t over til it’s over, right? Kids may be heading back to school in a few weeks, but that doesn’t mean the festival season is dying down anytime soon. The Midwest is teeming with family friendly events, which take advantage of the great summer weather and the diverse ethnic cultures.
Here’s a look of some of the activities planned for August.
Midwest Corvette and Chevy Car Show. The annual event takes place August 17-19 and features a bevy of classic cars. You can check out all the action at the Porter County Exposition Center and Fairgrounds off of Hwy. 49 in Porter, Indiana.
Carifete. This popular Caribbean carnival offers calypso and steel pan music and performers in masquerade costumes and takes place in Chicago on August 18th.
Chicago Air And Water Show. Billed as the largest free show of its kind in the United States, this extremely popular event features the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Army Parachute Team Golden Knights. It is held along the lakefront between Fullerton Parkway and Oak Street at North Avenue Beach in downtown Chicago. The water show begins at 9 a.m. and air show runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on August 18th and 19th.
Ukrainian Fest. This colorful ethnic festival celebrates all things Ukrainian. The event includes live music, dancing, food, and arts and crafts. It takes place at Smith Park, 2500 W. Grand Ave. in Chicago on August 18th and 19th.
Michigan City Lakefront Art Festival. This annual event showcases the work of hundreds of local artists. It takes place at Washington Park in Michigan City, Indiana from August 18th to the 19th.
Viva! Chicago Latin Music Festival. This event is one of the largest of its kind in the region, featuring performers playing cumbias, reggaeton, salsa, merengue, tango, ballads, and Spanish-language pop and rock. It takes place at Chicago’s Grant Park on August 25th and 26th.
Bucktown Arts Fest. This annual gathering of painters, sculptors, photographers and other artists is celebrating its 21st anniversary this year. It takes place at Holstein Park, Lyndale Street and Oakley Avenue in Chicago from August 25th to the 26th.
Taste Of Greece. You don’t want to miss this yummy event. Along with all the incredible Greek food the festival includes traditional Greek music, belly dancing, acrobats, and other entertainment. It takes place on Halsted Street between Washington Boulevard and Van Buren Street in Chicago on August 25-26.
