I recently learned of an extreme way to lose weight, the tongue patch diet. It is a surgical procedure where a doctor uses prolene mesh; a material used to repair hernias and sutures it to the tongue. This makes eating solid foods very painful, limiting a person’s diet to liquids.
The patch usually stays on for no more than a month and according to some doctors, it has had success. There are also claims that side effects have been minimal.
There is so much to say about such an extreme and potentially dangerous way to “help” someone lose weight. First of all, it is completely irresponsible for any doctor to perform such a procedure. I cannot imagine how a doctor could justify such a thing.
Second, if it is so temporary, why bother? Of course someone can lose weight just taking in mostly liquids for a month but what happens when the patch comes off? The weight is going to come right back on because they haven’t dealt with the real issue.
It is also incredibly unhealthy to lose weight this way. Quick fixes are generally not good for you. It reminds me of the instant riches scams out there…anything that happens that fast isn’t for real.
The problem with the tongue patch diet and even some of the other surgeries that people go through to lose weight is that if they don’t get to the real heart of the matter, it won’t make a difference long-term.
There is a reason that people overeat. There is a reason people struggle with their weight. Unless those issues are taken care of, no quick fix…including a tongue patch diet, will help.
If you want to lose weight, don’t go to extreme measures. Don’t choose ways that are unhealthy. It won’t help in the long-run and you could be doing yourself more damage than you are by having extra weight.
Losing weight requires time, patience, dedication and a willingness to sacrifice. It’s something we sometimes struggle with as people because we want everything instantly. But a healthy weight is best achieved by hard work and smart choices.
